Today, I am so happy to introduce to you Rachel John, a writer specializing in closed door contemporary romance books and romcoms. I’ve been reading Rachel’s books for quite a while now. USA Today Bestselling Author Rachel John loves to read anything with romance or humor and thinks the best books should combine the two. She’s found that writing is the best way to burn dinner. When not writing, she’s reading, drawing, driving kids to various locations, or attempting to revive her exercise habit.

What inspired you to start writing?
I’ve been writing and telling myself stories since childhood. What inspired me to start writing a novel was my husband’s work hours! Thankfully, we see each other a lot more these days.

Can you share a brief summary of your latest book?
My last published book was The Backup Christmas Crush. I have a series of Christmas romances about mistaken matches, and I love coming up with plots to fit that theme. In this one, Callan’s little sister has just started dating his best friend, and then his best friend’s old crush moves back to town. Callan decides it’s time to step up his game. He’ll be the distraction Gemma never sees coming. Hijinks ensue 🙂
Do you have a favorite character you’ve written? If so, tell us about them!
Oof. I love so many of them. Probably my favorite is Denver from my Sworn to Loathe You series. He shows up as a side character in books 1 and 2, gets his happily ever after in book 3, and shows up for a cameo in book 4. I love him because he’s confident, honest, great with women, and the sunshine to my grumpy Sadie.
Writing Process & Inspiration
Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
I’ll see a commercial or hear a song and a certain line will get my mind going.
Do you have a writing routine or any habits that help you stay creative?
Consistency is key. I’m not great at it, but I strive for it.
What’s your favorite part of the writing process?
Writing the first third. You get to drop all those plot cookie crumbs and write a meet-cute or meet-hate, and it’s not yet time to follow through on any of it yet.
Are there any authors who have influenced your writing style?
I don’t consciously try to write like anyone, but I’ve been a long time fan of Janette Rallison’s humor. She’s probably the reason I fell into romcom.
Neither. I neglect it all and get up to drink water occasionally.
What’s something readers might be surprised to learn about you?
I’m super awkward in person. LOL!
Where can readers buy your books?
All of my books are currently on Amazon and in Kindle Unlimited. However, my audiobooks are everywhere and you should definitely request them through whatever library app you use.
Are you currently working on any new projects? If so, can you give us a sneak peek?
I am coming out of winter hibernation and just starting on a Northanger Abbey romcom, tentatively titled, Checking out Mr. Tilney (library-themed). I listened to the book again recently, and I’m excited to lean into Catherine’s adventurous streak and Henry Tilney’s teasing flirty side.
What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Don’t let the marketing monster destroy your happiness. Fall in love with reading and writing over and over again. Family comes first.
